Why is our work needed?

Almost 50% of adults and 75% of young people are re-convicted within one year of release. For those serving a sentence of less than 12 months, this rises to 61%.
Research has found that prisoners who do not take part in education are three times more likely to re-offend.
It costs an average of £45,000 to keep a person in prison for one year.
The number of prisoners in England and Wales has increased by 40,000 in the last seven years.
In addition, there is the personal cost of re-offending to victims, the victims’ families, the wider community and to ex-prisoners and their families.
